Chris was a lot older than she was; he was in high school and was old enough to drive a car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, Chris!\u201d she said, waving a page of the neighborhood newspaper in his face. \u201cLook what I got!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris closed the door behind him and took the paper from Mandy\u2019s shaking hand. He glanced at the headline, then looked back at his sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight here,\u201d she said, realizing that her brother had not seen her picture at the bottom of the front page. She poked her finger at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>He finally located her photograph under the headline \u201cCarrier of the Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s terrific, Sis.\u201d He read the short paragraph beneath her picture, describing why Mandy had been selected as their Carrier of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says here you\u2019re one of the hardest-working kids ever to deliver The Sentinel,\u201d Chris said, smiling. \u2018\u201dA valuable part of <em>The Sentinel <\/em>team,\u2019 it says. That\u2019s terrific, Sis,\u201d he repeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get a twenty-dollar gift certificate to Mama Mia\u2019s,\u201d she said, referring to a popular restaurant in their town.<\/p>\n<p>Dad walked up and draped an arm on Mandy\u2019s shoulders. \u201cI think she deserves it,\u201d Dad said. \u201cShe\u2019s worked hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sure have,\u201d Mandy said, beaming with happiness. \u201cSometimes my hands get really sore from folding and wrapping all those papers. And my legs used to get sore from riding my bike to deliver them!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m really glad you do it,\u201d Dad said. \u201cAnd I think God is too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is?\u201d Mandy said. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d Dad said, \u201cbecause God values hard work as much as we do . . . more, I guess. That\u2019s why he commands us to \u2018work with our hands\u2019 and not to be lazy.\u201d Dad smiled. \u201cSo, Mandy,\u201d he said, \u201care you taking anybody with you to Mama Mia\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to take you and Mom <em>and<\/em> Chris,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that would cost more than twenty dollars,\u201d Dad warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s OK,\u201d Mandy said. \u201cI\u2019ve got some money saved up to pay for the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell you what,\u201d Dad said. \u201cWhy don\u2019t I pay for the rest? We\u2019ll call it our \u2018hard worker of the year\u2019 award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right!\u201d Mandy said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TO DISCUSS: If your family had a \u201chard worker of the year\u201d award, who do you think would receive the honor?
