{"id":61230,"date":"2021-05-16T15:34:16","date_gmt":"2021-05-16T20:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/?p=61230"},"modified":"2025-08-06T13:07:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T18:07:06","slug":"apostle-paul-applicable-writings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/apostle-paul-applicable-writings\/","title":{"rendered":"The Apostle Paul\u2019s Writings: Still Applicable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><strong>The Apostle Paul wrote a good bit of the New Testament, and much of the Christian lifestyle and church governance come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotquestions.org\/how-many-books-did-Paul-write.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul<\/a>&#8216;s teachings. Should you and I still listen to him? The Bible is, after all, pretty old.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><br \/>\nHas the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/is-the-bible-fact-or-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bible<\/a> <\/strong>become so outdated that we\u2019re smarter to follow the standards set by current culture? Or does it still speak, with power and relevance, into modern life?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wrestle with these questions from time to time, but so far I\u2019ve always returned to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/who-recorded-bible-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bible<\/a><\/strong>. I&#8217;ve found its God-inspired words to hold truth. Its teachings have helped me to build a firm foundation to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/living-in-freedom-from-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walk in wholeness<\/a><\/strong>. Society can\u2019t do that; its stability is an illusion because of ever-changing standards. Take morality, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Love,&#8221; in every flavor, is now \u201cright,\u201d because society now asserts that a person\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/postmodernism-false-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjective<\/a><\/strong> view can\u2019t be labeled as \u201cwrong.\u201d The same goes for sex. Society enthusiastically champions the freedom of personal experimentation and expression. But this \u201cfreedom\u201d often results in chains. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I personally experienced this with my <\/span><\/i><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wounds-shame-isolation-my-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>11-year addiction<\/i><\/a><\/strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pornography. Despite its promised satisfaction and intimacy, I lived wounded and disconnected, hiding in shame.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>On whose authority does Paul speak? Do his teachings help us to live our best life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61232  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2021\/05\/Apostle-Paul-scaled-e1621186516790.jpg\" alt=\"Apostle Paul\" width=\"561\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Christ Bestowed Apostle Authority\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we get to Paul&#8217;s authority, let&#8217;s define the term &#8220;Apostle.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus first used the term to reference the 12 men He commissioned to preach the kingdom of Heaven to the Jews, God\u2019s chosen people (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/matthew\/10\/1-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 10:1-7<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After His <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/hope-christ-resurrection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resurrection<\/a><\/strong>, Jesus then commissioned the Apostles (all but Judas, who hanged himself in remorse after betraying Jesus to be crucified) to spread the gospel <em>to all nations and people<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2028%3A16-20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 28:16-20<\/a><\/strong>). These early evangelists were thus distinguished in human history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"border: 2px solid #cccccc; background: #d7d7d7; padding: 18px; color: #1a2c63; text-align: left;\"><b>The Apostles were recognized as holding God-given authority because Jesus had personally selected and appointed them to share His teachings.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By definition, an Apostle had to have literally seen and walked with the risen Lord. Paul had not done so, yet Jesus <i>did<\/i> call him. And so dramatically that Paul instantly stopped persecuting the early Church, forfeiting all else to ardently champion it. His impact on the world would be amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+26&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 26<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we read the details of Paul\u2019s vision of how Jesus revealed Himself as Paul travelled the road to Damascus. Of this life-changing encounter (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Corinthians+15%3A1-11&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Corinthians 15<\/a><\/strong>)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Paul wrote, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.\u201d <\/span><\/i>Paul&#8217;s personal commission by Christ (Acts 26:16-18) gave him the authority to speak for God with boldness and tenacity.<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul reiterated his authority by sharing his commission in Galatians <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Galatians%201&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Galatians+2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He further distinguished himself from false apostles by performing miracles in Jesus\u2019 name (1 Corinthians 12:12). And when he brought new teachings to the Jews in Berea (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+17%3A10-12&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 17:10-12<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), they examined the Scriptures to see if Paul\u2019s words had support. They found they did.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>The Apostles Confirmed Paul\u2019s Authority<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The believers in the early Church sought out and accepted the teachings and miracles of the Apostles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of the authority Christ had clearly given them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul and the other Apostles were supernaturally empowered, just as Jesus promised. In <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/john\/14-26.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:26<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 15:26-27 we read that they were sent a helper (the Holy Spirit) to testify of God and to teach them further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Apostle Peter, upon whom Christ declared He would build His Church, confirmed Paul\u2019s authority when he asserted that Paul\u2019s letters <em>were equal with other Scriptures<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Peter+3%3A15-16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Peter 3:15-16<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he wrote, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear in mind that our Lord\u2019s patience means salvation, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"border: 2px solid #cccccc; background: #d7d7d7; padding: 18px; color: #1a2c63; text-align: left;\"><b>Paul\u2019s God-given authority withstood the scrutiny of the other Apostles. His conversion was too compelling.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Saint-Ignatius-of-Antioch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ignatius<\/a><\/strong>, a Church father from the first century (AD 50-115), further confirmed Paul\u2019s authority. He<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0wrote, \u201cI do not issue orders like an Apostle,\u201d and \u201cnor am I such a disciple as Paul or Peter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Paul\u2019s Teachings Remain Relevant to Us<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither Paul, nor the other Apostles, spoke or acted on their own power.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus knew they would share His teachings in their own personal styles, which makes the Bible so unique. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their authority and His authority were combined, as God intended.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We can trust that God knew what He was doing when He commissioned them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of Paul\u2019s teachings are hard for us to understand, as they were written to address specific issues happening in the various church communities he was shepherding. Some of his writings seem harsh in the view of our modern lens. <em><strong>But <\/strong><\/em><\/span><strong><em>Paul\u2019s words remind us of our sin and the grace of Christ\u2019s work on the cross to make us righteous before God.<\/em> <\/strong>Every person needs to hear and accept these truths, to understand how much they are already loved, accepted, and wanted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I choose to not sway with the instability of cultural morality, but to live to the set standard of my loving and unchanging God. Paul\u2019s writings are God\u2019s words. So as I read and study them, I strive to live by them. The lifestyle Paul promotes is good. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"border: 2px solid #cccccc; background: #d7d7d7; padding: 18px; color: #1a2c63; text-align: left;\">Without Paul&#8217;s teachings, I would still be living in the shame and guilt of my porn addiction.
