{"id":71809,"date":"2022-09-22T14:09:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T19:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/?p=71198"},"modified":"2025-08-06T13:18:03","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T18:18:03","slug":"talking-to-people-like-jesus-did","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/talking-to-people-like-jesus-did\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking to People, Like Jesus Did"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can still recall the precious moment that I devoted myself to Christ. I remember becoming totally sold-out, convinced that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/jesus-resurrection-fact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus rose<\/a><\/strong>, saved me from my sins, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loves <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me forever. From that point on, spreading His message of salvation became so meaningful to me that it had to be my life\u2019s purpose. I wanted nothing more than for people to accept the historical and spiritual truths of the Christian faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But early on, as I began talking to people about Christ, I found that most people were <i>no<\/i>t receptive to the message. To my surprise, many <a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/effectively-dialogue-skeptics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversations<\/a> ended quite abruptly. I couldn\u2019t understand why people could so easily reject the Gospel message that I deeply treasured.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could they not love hearing about Jesus, especially after what He did for them on the cross?<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Was I the problem?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71811  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2022\/09\/talking-to-people.jpg\" alt=\"talking to people\" width=\"502\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2022\/09\/talking-to-people.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2022\/09\/talking-to-people.jpg?resize=300,195 300w, https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2022\/09\/talking-to-people.jpg?resize=768,499 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Talking to People About Jesus, But Doing it Wrong<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this kept happening, I realized that although I was sharing the TRUTH of Jesus, I was getting in the way. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought people were rejecting the truth of Jesus because they were rejecting Him. Turns out, they couldn\u2019t stand talking to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I began to realize that it was <em>the way<\/em> I was talking to people about the Gospel message that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve heard <a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/featured-talks\/?_ga=2.45908580.1104373625.1624302760-733404957.1621631733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh McDowell<\/a> say, <i>\u201cTruth doesn\u2019t change, but the way you present it better change.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This struck at the heart of my problem. I wasn&#8217;t adapting my message to my audience. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was talking to people in the same tone, convinced that the unchanging truth of Christ meant that I also could be unchanging in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke to others. I came across like an insensitive robot! My passion for Jesus came out all wrong. <em>Perhaps you can relate?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I wanted people to get excited about the truth of Christ. I wanted to draw them <em>to<\/em> Jesus, but my way of going about it pushed them <em>away<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading my Bible one day, I was overjoyed to finally make the connection with how I could change. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%204%3A15&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephesians 4:15<\/a><\/strong> says this: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the simplest verses are so powerful. It was crystal clear \u2014 I was talking to people about the truth, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not with <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does it really mean to speak in love? The next part of the verse clues us in:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<em>\u201cgrow up in every way\u2026into Christ.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>When we&#8217;re young, we often look up to certain people that we decide we want to be like when we grow up. So we start acting like them. We might even dress like them. As a kid, I <em>really<\/em> admired Spiderman. I LOVED wearing my Spiderman costume! As children of God, growing into looking like Jesus means that we try to <i>imitate <\/i>Who He is.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As children of God, growing into looking like Jesus means that we try to imitate Him.That&#8217;s the key to speaking the truth in love. Instead of trying to measure up against a list of \u201cdo\u2019s\u201d and \u201cdon&#8217;ts\u201d or simply \u201cbe nicer,\u201d I opened my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/is-the-bible-fact-or-fiction\/\"><b>Bible<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>to Jesus. I soaked up His example like a sponge, just as I did when I tried to be like Spiderman.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I allowed Jesus to become the object of my admiration, I not only began to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally <\/span><\/i>imitate Him, He began to change me. This is why spending time with Christ in prayer, reading about Him in the Bible, and learning from others about Him is <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essential.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoyed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus, I began to deeply admire Him \u2014 and wanted to show up like He does. As His Word changed me, I slowly began to talk to people about His truth in love.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His love.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Jesus Connected With Each Person<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One particular Bible passage that deepened <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my admiration of Christ is about a woman highlighted in <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+5%3A25-34&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 5:25-34<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story begins with Jesus in a crowd, \u201cpressed around\u201d on all sides. One in the crowd trying to get close to Jesus was this woman, who \u201chad been subject to bleeding for twelve years.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to note the context here. The Old Covenant Law stated that women with blood issues had to be \u201cput apart\u201d from the community for seven days. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This woman had been bleeding for 12 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pause and let that register. A <em>decade<\/em> of bleeding would have debilitated, depressed, and weakened her. Worse, she was made to live apart from her community, friends, and family. Exhausted. Lonely. Desperate for connection and love. Desperate for a way out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark gives us the details of this encounter:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak, because she thought, \u201cIf I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.\u201d <\/i><i>Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. He turned to the crowd and asked, \u201cWho touched my clothes?\u201d \u201cYou see the people crowding against you,\u201d His disciples answered, \u201cand yet you can ask, \u2018Who touched me?\u2019 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at His feet and, trembling with fear, told Him the whole truth. He said to her, \u201cDaughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.org\/illustration\/how-jesus-interacted-people\"><b>Jesus told her the Good News<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He stopped everything, gave her His full attention, and addressed her as she truly was: not defective, not worthless, but as His beloved child. Jesus told her the truth in love. He carefully noted her desperation, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaned into<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> her vulnerability. I envision her sobbing tears of joy! Jesus fully <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accepted her \u2014 and now she could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus didn&#8217;t tell people the Good News because He <i>had to, <\/i>but because <i>He loved them. <\/i>Though He could have stayed in Heaven, Jesus chose to become human, like us, so that we could see Him eye-to-eye, and clearly see and hear the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wow, I had it all upside down! Truth be told, in my early days of evangelizing, I spoke to everyone as if they were a Pharisee. But I realized that when I talk to people about the Good News, I must <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with love \u2014 as Jesus did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I must let that love guide <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I speak to them. To show love, I have to want to understand others. I must step into their world and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/connections-improve-relationship\/\"> <b>be relational<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with what they&#8217;re dealing with \u2014 as Jesus did. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it&#8217;s harder for me because I don&#8217;t have God&#8217;s loving nature, but I could certainly do better!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Let\u2019s Follow Jesus\u2019 Example<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Jesus is for all of us, because He knows how desperately we need to be in relationship with Him. So let\u2019s NOT get in the way and<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/more-effectively-talk-skeptic\/\"><b>mess that up<\/b><\/a><b>!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I invite you to reflect upon your own journey with Him. Reflect on how God reached out to you.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was with kindness and compassion, right? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how should that guide you in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites-stage.josh.org\/main\/showing-christ-relevant\/\"><b>talking to people<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the truth of Christ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope you feel encouraged to imitate Christ in not only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said it. Let\u2019s admire Him, and get excited about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prodigalthought.net\/2009\/08\/18\/jesus-interaction-with-people\/\"><b>being like Him<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that others can come to personally know Him, too!<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt; God wants a relationship with you.
